This is the third year SANCHAR celebrated Joy of Giving Week and received a huge response from educational institutions, hotels, banks, hospitals, corporate houses and individuals. This annual festival of giving is a platform for everyone to reach out and donate their time, money, skills, books and other educational materials, medicines, toys etc. to those who are less fortunate and facing severe scarcity of resources. The Inaugural Programme was held on 2nd October at Diamond Park (near Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Borough XVI). SANCHAR’s staff and board members, friends and well wishers, volunteers, local residents, children and people with disabilities and their family members participated in the programme. People fulfilled the wishes of the children who were present there or whose wishes were written on the wish tree that was placed there. SANCHAR’s staff and volunteers made different food items, put up stalls, sold them and raised funds. Besides inaugural programme, wish trees were put up for the week in 12 different places in Kolkata, i.e. Novotel Kolkata Hotel and Residences (New Town), Kenilworth Hotel (Shakespeare Sarani), Starmark (Mani Square), Vivekananda College (Thakurpukur), Hotel Sapphire Suites (Lindsay Street), Nehru Children's Museum (Jawaharlal Nehru Road), Taj Bengal Hotel (Alipore), The BSS School (Gariahat Road), Heritage Institute of Technology (Anandapur), Indian Institute of Management (Joka), The Oberoi Grand Hotel (Jawaharlal Nehru Road) and HDFC Bank (Shakespeare Sarani). These wish trees were made out of card board and people fulfilled the wishes of the children written on the tree in cash or in kind. During the week Swabalambi (an inclusive income generating group of persons with disabilities supported by SANCHAR) exhibited and sold their handicraft products in Oberoi Grand, Taj Bengal, Forum Mall, ITC limited, National Gems Higher Secondary School and in South Point School. Moreover, the Oberoi Grand Hotel, Vivekananda College for Women, Kamala Girls' High School, St. Thomas' Girls' School and National Gems Higher Secondary School collected and donated us clothes, educational and school materials, games and toys, different gift items and old newspaper and books. This year Priyamvada Birla Aravind Eye Hospital participated in Joy of Giving Week with us. With their support and collaboration, we organised an eye camp at our premises on 9th October. 125 people were registered in the camp and availed eye check-up services. 77 of them have been provided spectacles and 5 people have undergone free cataract surgery.
